IEP & 504 GUIDANCE

Navigating School Supports for ADHD & ASD

A quick reference for school professionals helping families understand and advocate for their neurodivergent students.

IEP vs. 504 Plan β€” What's the Difference?

Both plans support students with disabilities, but they work differently:

  • IEP β€” Individualized Education Program under IDEA. Provides specialized instruction and related services. For students who need more than accommodations.
  • 504 Plan β€” Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Provides accommodations within the general education setting. Broader eligibility than IEP.
  • Students with ADHD often qualify for 504. Students with ASD often qualify for IEP. Many qualify for both.

Common Accommodations for ADHD & ASD

  • Extended time on tests and assignments
  • Preferential seating / reduced distraction setting
  • Breaks during testing or class
  • Written instructions in addition to verbal
  • Use of fidget tools or sensory supports
  • Access to a quiet testing environment
  • Reduced homework load or modified assignments
  • Check-in/check-out with a counselor
  • Social skills support group access

Requesting an Evaluation β€” Parent Rights

Parents have the right to request a psychoeducational evaluation in writing at any time. The school district must respond within 60 days. Key points:

  • Request must be in writing β€” email is acceptable
  • School cannot deny a written evaluation request without justification
  • Parents may obtain an independent educational evaluation (IEE) if they disagree with the school's results
  • Evaluation is at no cost to the family

Transition Planning for Neurodivergent Students

Transition planning must begin by age 16 for students with IEPs. For students with ADHD and ASD, early planning is especially important:

  • College disability services applications and documentation
  • ND-specialized college counselors in South Florida
  • Vocational rehabilitation services (Florida VR)
  • Life skills and independence programs
  • Social skills support for the college environment
